In the year 2000, a visionary step was taken to preserve one of South Africa’s natural treasures—the Klein Swartberg Mountain. Under the leadership of Michael Swart, owner of the historic Swartrivier farm in the Caledon district of the Western Cape, the Klein Swartberg Conservancy was founded. The primary aim was to unite the 18 private landowners of the mountain, creating a collaborative effort to restore the area to its original splendor. This initiative sought to combat the invasive alien species that were threatening the unique fynbos biodiversity of the region, crucial for maintaining the ecological balance of the entire landscape. At the time, it was clear that significant intervention was necessary to slow down the invasive species’ spread and prevent the loss of the mountain’s precious biodiversity. The Conservancy’s formation marked the beginning of a dedicated effort to rejuvenate and protect this irreplaceable jewel in the Cape Floristic Kingdom.
