We believe “Each journey starts with a chosen destination in mind. The clearer the view an organisation has of where it is going, the more likely are the chances of getting there.” This was the approach adopted by members of the Conservancy in August 2022 when the Vision-2030 Management Plan was unanimously approved. In that Plan we reconfirmed the following objectives:

  1. We conserve the natural resources of the Klein Swartberg Mountain providing critical ecosystem dependence to commercial agriculture surrounding the mountain.
  2. We restore the ecological balance of the landscape where it has been damaged by invasive alien infestation, changing fire cycles and neglected care over biodiversity loss.
  3. We protect and maintain the area as an irreplaceable landscape housing species and populations of plants-, fish-, and frog-species, some of which have become extinct elsewhere and occur nowhere else on the planet.
  4. We promote and initiate the development of the ecotourism potential of the mountain in the form of hiking- and mountain bike trails.
  5. We promote an understanding with all stakeholders of how a well-maintained biodiverse ecosystem generates socio-economic benefits into the regional economy.

To achieve these objectives, the most important goal is to have 80% of the mountain cleared of invasive alien vegetation by 2030. What we do and how is explained in more detail under “Targeting Invaders”.

It is an ambitious goal, as some people say, but we have already gone a good distance towards this chosen destination, thanks to an efficient clearing team and capable management.
